Under the direction of the Executive Chef & Sous Chef/LeadCook, the Assistant Cook/Cook is responsible for preparing delectable meals in a safe and timely manner. Stock delivery, storage and cleanliness of the kitchen. Must understand and be able to perform all food service and related procedures in a safe, professional, courteous, efficient, and organized manner.

KEY DUTIES

  • Preparing food in accordance with the established menus and established standards for portion control, temperature, quality, plate presentation, food safe practices, timely delivery and minimizing all leftovers.
  • To provide creative input to menus, food preparation methods and special event menus
  • Receive all food and supplies and check delivery prior to signing, problems noted and reported. Audits food temperature, fridge and freezer temperatures
  • Ensure food is safely served, stored and properly labelled and dated after receiving it to avoid spoilage and facilitate proper rotation.
  • Report inventory shortages to Executive Chef or Sous Chef/Lead Cook
  • Work in compliance with all public health regulations.
  • Maintains work area in an orderly and sanitary condition. Participate in the proper cleaning of the kitchen including kitchen equipment, counter tops and beverage centre.
  • May assume the duties of the Executive Chef as designated during absence

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

License/Designation:
  • Food Safe Certificate level 1
  • Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector check
Experience:

Must be knowledgeable and experienced in:

  • Creative food preparation, accurate portion control
  • Asian and European and contemporary cuisine
  • Food preparation in accordance with menus.
  • Use of kitchen equipment.
  • One year experience in Senior living community
  • Strong organizational and time management
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrates good judgment, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Education:
  • Must have a Canadian high school graduation or equivalent.
  • Must have a formal training in food preparation or Culinary School.
  • Must be able to read, write, and comfortably communicate in English.
  • Must understand oral and written instructions.
  • Must have completed Food Safe
  • Successful completion of WHMIS.

  • Empathy for and understanding of the needs of seniors, their families and their professional service providers.
  • Good health.
  • No allergies to cleaning chemicals.
  • Able to perform physical work, i.e. lifting, bending etc.
